Ingredients Explained – What is Astaxanthin and How Does it Work?

Have you heard of Astaxanthin? Well, it’s the latest super antioxidant. We use it in our tablet supplement, Gold Collagen® Defence, for its various benefits, including cell protection and skin hydration.

Astaxanthin is classified as a carotenoid, a nutrient that is responsible for the yellow, orange or red colour in a variety of foods. Astaxanthin for example gives krill and shrimp its pink hue and is also the reason for flamingos being pink (!), as they mainly live on a diet of these aquatic species. Other carotenoids are beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene.

Carotenoids overall are important factors in human health but our bodies do not produce these nutrients naturally. We can only obtain them through diet or food supplements. Astaxanthin is especially well known for its antioxidant properties. It has the power to naturally reduce free radicals and prevent cells from oxidative damage.

Astaxanthin is regarded a super antioxidant  purely for its potency. It’s 65 times more powerful than vitamin C, 54 times more powerful than beta-carotene and 14 times more powerful than vitamin E*. Further, Astaxanthin can support eye health, promote skin hydration and elasticity and help improve the body’s immune system.  What an all-rounder!
