Menopause, The Gift that Keeps on Giving

Menopause_the_gift_that_keeps_on_giving.jpg

Menopause, the gift that keeps on giving —a journey as unique as a fingerprint, and sometimes just as unpredictable! While it may not be everyone's idea of a gift, menopause does come bearing surprises, challenges, and yes, even some laughter along the way.

The First Gift

I remember experiencing my first symptom while in an airport in a foreign country.  A “black wave” came over me as I was waiting to board the plane and I honestly thought I. WAS. DYING! Now looking back at it, I was entering perimenopause and had absolutely no clue, as I was in my 30’s.  Eventually the “black wave” and I became friends and now that I know I was not dying, looking back, I can laugh about that and other little gifts that popped up along the way.

The Rollercoaster Gift

Let’s just say that navigating Menopause felt a lot like a rollercoaster ride, with little gifts of mood swings, hot flashes, thinning hair, insomnia, and ugggghhhhh, for me personally, the night sweats - which were too much.  This coming from someone who likes to be as fresh as fresh can be - all the time.  I learned to carry body wipes during that time, to quickly freshen up, especially when travelling and walking from sales call to sales call, or when sitting there motionless - as hot flashes would appear at the most inconvenient of times.  I could have made it easier for myself and asked for help, but I went through it cold turkey. There were two things I did oblige in: a collagen supplement and strength training.

The Gift of Vitality

Turns out, Collagen isn't just about vanity—it's about vitality too. Studies have demonstrated its ability to support bone health.  As we lose oestrogen, we become prone to bone density loss, increasing the risk of osteoperosis.  So, while menopause may be the gift that keeps on giving, with a little help from collagen to complement any other things you may be doing or taking to help you through menopause, we can laugh in the face of those hot flashes and embrace this next chapter with grace, humour, and strength.

The Gift of Strength

The strength training helped with increasing muscle mass (muscle burns more calories than fat even while resting), bone density (helping with the risk of osteoperosis). And with increased endorphin levels from the strength training session, it helped to improve mood and overall well-being.   It's important to exercise consistently, eat a balanced diet and overall manage stress, practice self-care and drink collagen!

Its ability to support skin elasticity can help combat those pesky wrinkles that seem to pop up overnight…whether we choose to age gracefully or grab the bull by the horns. Parting words, exercise, eat a balanced diet, manage stress, practice self-care and drink collagen. So, while menopause may throw us the occasional curveball, with a little help from collagen, we can face it head-on - because who has time to fret when we still have a whole other world to conquer!
