D-Glucosamine

D-Glucosamine

Glucosamine is one of the most abundant monosaccharides (sugars) and is naturally produced in the body, but we sometimes need to replenish our body’s supply. Glucosamine and chondroitin, substances naturally present in cartilage, bones and joints, are reported to show benefits in the treatment of osteoarthritis and similar conditions. It is rare to find them together in the foods we eat but they can be found in supplements. These two active ingredients can help maintain healthy joints and muscles, making them ideal for those of us with active and busy lifestyles.

Glucosamine can be extracted from the hard shell (the chitin exoskeleton) of shellfish or via a fermentation process. Although glucosamine itself is not an allergen, people with sensitivity or allergy to shellfish should avoid shellfish-derived glucosamine products. However, you are safe with Minerva Gold Collagen products as we only use glucosamine made from fermentation.

Glucosamine-6-phosphate, produced from glucosamine in the body, is the precursor required for the synthesis of all amino (nitrogen-containing) sugars. The synthesis of these sugars is the first step in the pathway to the production of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in the body such as hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen, elastin and GAGs are the main components of the matrix or scaffold that supports organs and tissues. HA has been reported to accelerate wound healing, enhance skin epidermal hydration and decrease fine lines and wrinkles.

Benefits:

  1. Supports joint function.
  2. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
  3. Anti-ageing properties.
  4. Supports healthy cartilage.

Glucosamine can be found in shellfish such as prawns, lobster and crab.
