Omega-3 Fish Oils

Omega-3 Fish Oils

Omega-3 Fish Oil is simply the fat or oil that is extracted from oily fish such as salmon, herring, mackerel, tuna, trout and sardines. Omega-3 fatty acids are uniquely healthy and can improve inflammation and cognitive function. Omega-3 fatty acids are also found in plants but the types of omega-3 found in fish oils (Eicosapentaenoic acid: EPA and Docosahexaenoic acid: DHA) are more beneficial than those found in plants.

Omega-3 fatty acids are important anti-inflammatory mediators. These polyunsaturated fatty acids can be metabolised in the body to promote healing and homeostasis. Specifically, EPA is converted, via a sequence of biochemical steps, into a compound called prostaglandin E3 (PGE3), a key molecule for maintaining tissue health.

Fish oil is also a great source of fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and D.

Benefits:

  1. May reduce blood pressure.
  2. Reported to improve cognitive function.
  3. Essential for early growth and development of babies.
  4. Can help with joint problems and skin disorders.
