What is the skin barrier, and why are ceramides so important after the age of 40?

When we talk about skin ageing, we tend to think of collagen. But there is another factor that is just as important, yet often goes unnoticed: the skin barrier.

If you notice increased dryness, sensitivity or a loss of radiance, the problem may not lie solely in the skin’s deeper layers, but in its outer protective layer.

What is the skin barrier?

The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin (stratum corneum) and acts as a protective shield against:

  • Irritation
  • Dehydration
  • Pollution
  • External aggressions

Its main function is to maintain water balance and prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL).

When this barrier is strong, the skin looks hydrated, radiant and resilient. When it weakens, dryness, sensitivity and visible signs of ageing appear.

What are ceramides and why are they so important?

Ceramides are essential lipids that act as the ‘cement’ holding skin cells together.

Imagine the skin as a wall:

  • The skin cells would be the bricks.
  • Ceramides would be the cement that holds them together.

Without ceramides, the barrier breaks down. The skin loses water, becomes more fragile and loses elasticity. That is why ceramides are essential for keeping skin hydrated, strong and protected.

Why do ceramides decrease with age?

From the age of 40 onwards, the natural production of ceramides gradually decreases. Furthermore, the following factors can accelerate this loss:

  • Cumulative sun exposure
  • Stress
  • Perimenopause and hormonal changes
  • Use of harsh cleansers

The result is drier, more reactive skin with more visible fine lines.

What happens when ceramides are lacking?

When the skin barrier weakens, clear signs appear:

  • Increased water loss (TEWL)
  • A feeling of tightness
  • Persistent dryness
  • More pronounced fine lines
  • More sensitive and less elastic skin

And here’s the key point: it’s not just a matter of appearance. It’s a matter of skin function.

Ceramides and mature skin: beyond collagen

Colágeno y ceramidas en la piel

Mature skin doesn’t just lose collagen; it also loses structural lipids such as ceramides.

Collagen acts on the deep structure (dermis), providing firmness. Ceramides act on the outer layer (epidermis), protecting and maintaining hydration.

If we focus solely on collagen, we are strengthening the internal structure. If we also focus on ceramides, we strengthen the external protection. The combination is far more comprehensive.

Ceramides + collagen: the most comprehensive structural approach

For firm, elastic and resilient skin, we need to target both layers of ageing:

  • Deep structure → Collagen
  • External barrier → Ceramides

When both work in synergy, the skin doesn’t just look better. It functions better.

Where does FORTE AGELESS fit in?

GOLD COLLAGEN® FORTE AGELESS takes a holistic approach to skin ageing. Its formula combines:

  • Hydrolysed collagen
  • PROLASTIN® elastin
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Ceramides

A treatment designed to support:

  • Firmness (collagen) and elasticity (elastin)
  • Hydration and skin barrier (hyaluronic acid + ceramides)

Collagen supports. Ceramides protect. FORTE AGELESS works on both layers of ageing. Strong skin isn’t just built from within. It also needs external protection.

Ceramides + collagen aren’t just trends. They’re structural balance. And when we understand how the skin works, we start to care for it more intelligently.
