L-Arginine

Arginine, in addition to a role in making new protein, also plays a key role in vasodilation and skin radiance. Arginine is needed for synthesis of nitric oxide (NO), which regulates many cell functions, including blood flow and energy metabolism in the mitochondria. These blood and energy benefits make it a popular supplement with athletes.

Arginine supports cell replication, wound healing and immune responses in the body. It is described as a semi-essential amino acid: for the typical person it is easily obtained, but during times of cellular stress such as pregnancy and infancy, higher levels are required via supplementation.

L-Arginine can be found in nuts , seeds, and dairy products.

Benefits:

  1. Helps to reduce blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
  2. As a vasodilator it also increases skin radiance.
  3. Supports T-cells and helps maintain a healthy immune system.
  4. Arginine can make creatine which can enhance sports performance.

L-Arginine is often referred to as a “nitric oxide donor”.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signalling molecule in cells and tissues, particularly for regulating blood flow.

  1. NO causes blood vessels to dilate thereby reducing blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health.
  2. This helps deliver more oxygen and nutrients to cells and increases energy.
  3. NO is used all over the body and affects brain and immune cell activity.

NO can only last in the body for a matter of seconds and thus needs to be made when needed and used immediately. It is arginine that the body uses to produce NO on demand.

In addition to producing the NO vasodilator, arginine is also reported useful in regulating blood sugar and insulin sensitivity in people with diabetes.
