Choline

Choline

Choline is an essential nutrient which must be obtained from the diet, typically as a salt such as phosphatidylcholine. It can be made from the amino acid, serine, but this occurs in very low amounts. It is important in cells and tissues and also as part of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. During the menopause choline levels can drop so dietary sources becomes more important.

Choline is sometimes recommended during pregnancy and it has been reported that information processing speed and visuospatial memory are improved in newborn babies following supplementation. It is also reported to improve cognitive and neurological performance in adults.

Choline can be found mainly in broccoli , peanut butter, mushrooms, eggs and dairy products

1 cup of boiled Broccoli gives 63 mg choline
