Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional yeast is an inactive yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) grown specifically for food. It has a naturally savoury, cheesy flavour and is popular in vegetarian and vegan diets.

Nutritional yeast contains approximately 45–55 g of protein per 100 g, although a typical serving is much smaller (around 5–15 g). It provides all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein.

Benefits:

  • Rich source of complete plant protein.

  • Naturally high in B vitamins; many products are also fortified with vitamin B12.

  • Provides dietary fibre, including beta-glucans.

  • Low in fat and sugar.

  • Adds a savoury "umami" flavour without dairy.

Did you know...

Just two tablespoons of nutritional yeast can provide around 8 g of protein, making it one of the most protein-dense foods available gram for gram. Many fortified varieties also provide 100% or more of the daily requirement for vitamin B12, making it particularly valuable for vegan diets.
