Lutein
Lutein is a type of carotenoid known as a xanthophyll. It is a pigment used for treating poor eyesight (age-related macular degeneration). Tomatoes contain key carotenoids such as lutein (and lycopene), potent antioxidants which can help to protect against free radical damage.
The carotenoid antioxidants can protect against UV-induced photodamage when used as oral supplement, although the best benefits are seen in combination with a topical product. This was shown by Palombo et al in 2007 in a study demonstrating the effects of lutein and zeaxanthin in protecting the skin from UV damage.
Benefits:
- Rich in antioxidants.
- Reduces blood pressure.
- Can provide relief from diabetes and urinary tract infections.
- Helps to stimulate blood circulation and reduces cholesterol levels.
- Prevents premature ageing.
Did you know…
Lutein and other carotenoids can build up or accumulate in the body, building a sturdy protective store for long term protection. This reservoir becomes depleted with age and thus supplements can help replenish the stores.
