The Skin Barrier Explained & Why it Matters More Than You Think

Have you ever had a skincare routine that worked wonders for you - before it seemed to suddenly stop working? Left with skin feeling tight or unusually dry, or maybe the products started to sting after months of feeling comfortable?  Your skin barrier may be the issue.

The skin barrier is trending and has become one of the popular talking points in skincare. But it is more than just a beauty buzzword. It's a vital part of your skin's natural defence system, keeping moisture in while protecting against environmental aggressors.

Understanding how the skin barrier works is important and can change the way you think about your skin care routine.

What is the skin barrier?

It is the stratum corneum, the outer most layer of the skin. Made up of mostly of skin cells, lipids and natural moisturising factors,  working together to help maintain the skin's structure and hydration.

Picture it as a protective wall, with skin cells forming much of the structure and the lipids filling between the cells to reinforce the barrier.

When it functions well, it helps to limit excessive loss of water from your skin and helps protects against external factors like environmental stressors. Thereby playing an important role in keeping the skin feeling resilient, hydrated and comfortable.

Why does the skin barrier mater?

Healthy skin is not just about how it looks. The skin is our largest organ and it's the barrier  between the body and the environment. When the skin barrier is disrupted, the skin can lose more water, resulting in drier, tighter, rougher-feeling skin or even be more sensitive.

The goal here is not about doing more or giving your skin more. Sometimes it just about giving your skin the opportunity and what it needs, to do its job well.

What can affect the skin barrier?

Your skin barrier deals with a lot, e v e r y  d a y.

UV exposure, pollution,  plus other environmental stressors can affect the skin. Add in lifestyle factors and skincare habits and that affects it too.

Frequent exfoliation, over-cleansing, and too many active ingredients at one time, can be challenging for some skin types. Even a routine that has been made up of individually popular products may not work well when combined. You need to consider what it is your skin actually needs.

Seasonal changes can have another effect on the skin. Colder outside temperatures, lower humidity, indoor heating can all contribute to drier-feeling skin, making autumn and winter a good time to reassess your skin-care routine.

The skin barrier and hydration

A healthy barrier and well hydrated skin are closely connected.  Well hydrated skin can feel smoother, more comfortable, softer.

Now, don't go drinking ton of water thinking it's going to fix the skin barrier overnight.  Skin hydration depends on multiple factors like the skin's own barrier function, environmental conditions, everyday habits and skincare products.

A barrier-conscious routine tends to focus on supporting hydration consistently rather than trying to correct dryness after it appears.

What about the skin microbiome?

The skin is home to a diverse pool of microorganisms known as the skin microbiome. They interact with the skin and its environment. This is one reason why skincare is increasingly focused on supporting the skin's natural environment vs. stripping it back. A routine that is tailored to the skin barrier and microbiome can help support healthy-looking skin.

What does a damaged skin barrier look like?

There really isn't one universal sign of a damaged barrier. But you may notice your skin feels different than it normally does.

Common signs can include:

  • Tightness or dryness
  • Rough or flaky feeling skin
  • Sensitivity increase
  • Redness
  • Products that can suddenly feel uncomfortable
  • A dull or dehydrated complexion

Keep in mind though, these signs can have many possible causes, so they aren't absolute proof that your skin barrier is damaged.

How can you support your skin?

Supporting the skin barrier doesn't necessarily mean purchasing an entire new collection of skincare (thought it is fun). Sometimes simpler can be better.

Keep cleansing gently

Cleansing removes all the grime from the day: excess oil, makeup, sweat and environmental residue. But over-cleansing can leave some skin types feeling tight and dry.

Choose a cleanser that suits your skin and avoid going for the feeling of 'squeaky clean' skin.

Prioritise hydration

A good moisturiser can help support the skin's hydration and comfort. Look for products that suit your skin type with ingredients designed to help maintain moisture.

Gentle exfoliation

When it comes to exfoliation, more is not always better.  When shopping for facial exfoliators look for ones that have been specifically developed for the face, rather a strong exfoliator labeled as gentle.

Sun protection

The holy grail to protecting your skin. We all know that UV exposure is one of the biggest contributors affecting visible skin ageing over time. Broad spectrum protection is crucial for your skin-health routine. And just because summer is over, does not mean we no longer need sun protection - because we do!

Pay attention to your lifestyle

It's more than just skincare when it comes to taking care of your skin.  Sleep, hydration, nutrition, environmental exposure and stress can all form part of a wider context in which your skin exists.

Remember the goal isn't perfection.  It's consistency.

What does beauty from the inside out have to do with skin

health?

Rather than focusing solely on what we put on our skin, there is an increasing interest in how nutrition, lifestyle and daily habits can support healthy-looking skin from within. Taking care of your skin isn't only about what you put on it, but also how you support it from within with everyday habits.

Since 2011, GOLD COLLAGEN® has focused on beauty from the inside out, combining hydrolysed marine collagen with carefully curated ingredients across the range.

Building a more resilient skincare routine

A skincare routine that works for one may not work for another. But understanding the skin barrier now gives you a useful foundation when making choices for your routine.

Focus on the basics first:   gentle cleansing, specialty treatment, hydration and sun protection (CTMP) and healthy everyday habits.

Sometimes simply giving what your skin needs to do its job is all the support that it needs.
