Horsetail

Horsetail

Horsetail is a herb also known as Equisetum arvense L. (the latin word equisetum translates as “horse hair”) It is rich in silicon, vitamins, minerals and other bioactive ingredients such as flavonoids and alkaloids. This extract has been used in herbal remedies for centuries, but always recommended for use in low doses as it is quite potent. It is reported to have antibacterial, mineralizing and strengthening benefits.

As we age, the levels of silicon in the body typically decrease and this is associated with brittleness of hair and nails. This in part is due to its ability to cross-link collagen fibres, which effectively binds the fibres together to impart physical strength and resilience.

Benefits:.

  1. Known to contain a high level of silica.

  2. Contributes to robustness of collagen fibres by crosslinking the fibres.

  3. Used to strengthen fingernails.

  4. May be useful for treating brittle bones in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis.

  5. Improves blood circulation
