30 Days to Dare

Day 28: Everything red

We’re sure you’ve heard the saying “Eat your 5 a day” or “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away” but what is the actual power behind fruit?  We all know that fruits and vegetables are full of fibre and rich in all essential vitamins and minerals and amino acids. Did you know the chemicals that give the fruits and vegetables those bright colours, have the most powerful antioxidant qualities that many of us are not aware of?

You may already know about foods you should eat for your heart or gut health, but what about foods that protect your cells? You need to eat antioxidant packed foods and that is in bright red food! Red fruits and vegetables contain several potent and specific antioxidants like lycopene (found in tomatoes), anthocyanins (found in red berries), ellagic acid (found in strawberries, raspberries and pomegranate) and resveratrol (found in red grapes). In case you’ve forgotten, an antioxidant is any nutrient and pigment rich food which is naturally high in potent active compounds that we call an antioxidant.

As I always say, “You are what you eat, drink and think”. Respecting your body is not difficult and you should not eat just for the sake of taste, think about the nutrients you are consuming for your body to become a well-oiled machine. Self-worth is one of the most important aspects when it comes to deciding what you put in the body, after all that is a big investment. So, when you’re on your next grocery shop, think of red, bright colourful foods as an investment for your mind, body and soul.
