Keratin
Keratin is a key structural protein in our hair, nails and skin. There are over 50 types of keratin, which work together to provide structural integrity, shape, strength and form. Hair is composed mainly of keratin protein (90%) and a small amount of lipid (1–9%).
The primary function of keratin is to build a strong and robust hair follicle and it protects hair from damage by several factors such as heat, chemicals and styling. Keratin can also be found in other epidermal structures such as feathers, nails, scales and horns of mammals, reptiles and birds. Specialised chemical bonding of the hair keratins determines whether your hails will be straight or curly. The hair grows at about 0.3 mm per day so we need a lot of keratin protein to make long flowing hair.
Keratin is found mainly in eggs, onion and legumes.
One large egg contains 6-7 grams of keratin.
