Melissa officinalis

Melissa officinalis

Melissa officinalis is a lemon-scented herb of the mint family and often referred to as “Lemon balm”. The name comes from the Greek for “honey bee” as the plant attracts bees for honey, but it is typically the leaves that are used as a herbal remedy (to aid digestion and sleep). It is a popular oil used in aromatherapy.

Lemon balm contains many phyto actives including eugenol, tannins and terpenes, however rosmarinic acid appears to be the most important active component. Rosmarinic acid is a polyphenolic compound that is reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory (primarily through inhibition of omega-6 fatty acid leukotriene metabolism) and antimicrobial activities. It can be used as a vasodilator to treat hypertension (via inhibition of the angiotensin pathway) and thus improves cardiovascular function.

Benefits:

  1. Reported to improve quality of sleep.

  2. Decreases stress and anxiety and improves overall mood.

  3. Contains flavonoids and rosmarinic acid, which are potent antioxidants.

  4. Antibacterial or antiviral properties.
