Ceramides

Ceramides are the major lipid constituent found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. They form sheet-like structures between skin cells, helping to create a protective barrier. They also play an essential role maintaining water permeability for the skin, overall blocking environmental irritants like pollution and dirt. They can be found naturally in dairy products such as eggs, soy, wheat and rice.

The eggs contain the highest percentage of ceramides and going down the list you have wheat, rice and soy last.

Their values per 100 g are typically 3-5%, 0.5%-2%, 0.6-1%, 0.5% respectively.

Factors that reduce ceramide levels: Ageing, Chemical Irritants, Cold temperatures, Low humidity, Microorganisms, Skin conditions (eczema), Stress.

Benefits:

  1. Water-loss prevention
  2. Form a protective layer for the skin
  3. Help reduce the appearance of wrinkles
  4. Overall support skin function

Did you know…

Ceramides make up 50% of the skins outer layer, this is also called the stratum corneum. This layer is your first line of defence, and if your ceramides aren’t functioning optimally your skin barrier weakens, making it easier for unwanted substances to penetrate the skin.
